Historic Visit to Romania by Israeli PM |
(2011-07-07) |

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, came on a visit to Bucharest on Wednesday. The visit was preceded by statements that set the theme of his tour of Romania and Bulgaria as being the official recognition of a Palestinian state. The Israeli high official underlined the idea that his country ruled out a peace dictated by the UN, and insisted on the need to continue bilateral negotiations towards actual peace.
The Romanian Prime Minister, Emil Boc, said that Romania believed that the only solution for lasting peace in the Middle East was direct negotiation. As he put it, quote, “We say it once again, our country supports the idea of two countries living side by side in peace and security, with no unilateral solutions. The solution negotiated between the sides is the only one that can provide a real and solid basis for a lasting and proper peace”. unquote
Bucharest has always had a balanced position in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and often acted as an arbiter between the sides. Speaking of Netanyahu’s visit to Bucharest, the Palestinian ambassador to Bucharest, Ahmad Bader Aqel, said that Romania did a lot for the Palestinian cause, even ignoring the worries caused by this visit.
During his visit, the Israeli PM met with the Romanian president, Traian Basescu. Among the topics they discussed was the fact that Romania is among the EU countries that are most sympathetic towards Israel. One explanation may be that 3.7% of the population of Israel, who either come from Romania or are descended from Romanians, still speak this language. The prime minister said, quote: “We want to show that we appreciate the friendship of Romanians, and that it is important to promote relations with this country”. Unquote.
After the talks it was announced that in November there would be a joint government session held by the Romanian and Israeli governments to discuss projects in agriculture, energy, infrastructure, defense, tourism, health, the environment and culture. Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the relationship between the two countries should be expanded, especially in the farming and food industries. He urged Romanian food producers to sell more produce on the Israeli market. As he put it, quote, “Israel and the other Middle Eastern nations look to Romania and believe that you are a model for the relations that we have in the Middle East, a model worth pursuing”.
