Under the slogan “Piazza Romania – one day to know a people”, Italians and Romanians have the opportunity to participate together in cultural and artistic events in Turin, Milan and then in Rome. The campaign to promote Romania's image includes exhibitions and photographs, presentations of traditional crafts and theatre performances. Meant to improve the way in which Romanians living and working in Italy are perceived, this campaign got on to a good start on Sunday in Turin, a town with a large Romanian community. Romania's consul in Turin, Petru Litiu:

“We are delighted to be the first to run this campaign and to say that it has been a success. The overall impression is good if we look at the statements of local officials with whom we have a very good collaboration and who said they have a good opinion of Romanians.”

Most excited about the event were the Romanians who have been living in the area for a few years. They were joined by thousands of people, including many Italians and tourists, who spent some time in the Castello Square in Turin admiring Romanian folk costumes, ceramic objects, live demonstrations of working with clay and wool, singing and dancing alongside Romanians and tasting their traditional food. Folk dances and brass brand music stayed with the visitors throughout the day, while the evening saw a concert by the Alexandru Balanescu Quartet and the band Sistem.

On Tuesday, Piazza del Duomo in Milan will host a performance by Masca Theatre and a screening of the film California Dreamin. The campaign organized by the Romanian Government will run until October the 9th, and is supported by local authorities in Turin, Milan and Rome. Similar events are taking place in Spain, which is also home to a large Romanian community. Bucharest's initiative follows a number of articles carried by the Italian press and focusing on the crimes committed by Romanians living in the Peninsula. These crimes were in fact the argument used by the Berlusconi government to pass a package of measures on immigration and public safety.
