AN ANTICIPATED ACTIVITY REPORT 18/09/2008
(2008-09-18)

After almost 4 years of office and with 2 months ahead of legislative elections in Romania, liberal prime-minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu claims to have fulfilled 95% of his objectives. The coalition led by Tariceanu was initially made up of the National Liberal Party , the Democratic Party, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania and the Conservative Party. At present the coalition has but two members – the National Liberal Party and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians and the minority government has survived only thanks to political deals with the Social Democrats in the opposition. The liberal Prime Minister suggests that most of the achievements of the coalition are the merit of his National Liberal Party:

“So, we managed to join the EU in January 2007 and after two more years of efforts we are now the country with the highest GDP growth in Europe. We have also made efforts to increase living standards by raising salaries.”

Figures do confirm a general upward trend of economic and social indicators. The 16% flat tax has increased the state budget by 60%. Inflation has plummeted from 21 to 7% in the last 4 years. Romania has posted an average 6% economic growth per year and in the first quarter of 2008 it reached a record 8.8 percent. Over 600 thousand jobs have been created in the last 3 years and foreign investment reached 35 billion Euros, and the GDP at the end of the year might reach 140 billion Euros, which is twice the figure of 2004. The opposition has a different picture to paint. They make the case of the poor purchasing power of the citizens and mismanagement of the public sector. For social democrat leader Mircea Geoana, the activity report presented by Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu lies by omission.

“In 2004 the liberal-democratic alliance promised to ensure a decent purchasing power for pensioners and families that work hard. They promised they’d build roads and hospitals, they promised free access to education for all children. After 4 years of governing by scandal, corruption and incompetence it has become very clear that most of their promises had been electoral lies.”

In his turn the president of the Democratic Party Emil Boc, is also accusing the incompetence of the government:

“If the private sector has boomed thanks to the flat tax imposed by the Democratic Party, the sectors administered by the government from public money like health, education, agriculture and infrastructure have been shamefully neglected.”

Emil Boc, leader of the Democratic Party in the opposition has wrapped up this report.
