“The Golden generation of Romanian film and theatre is again in mourning.” “The most beloved of earthmen has passed away.” “Goodbye, Stefan Iordache.” These are just a few of the headlines dedicated to the death of actor Stefan Iordache. In the daily Adevarul the president of the Romanian Theatre Union, actor Ion Caramitru, writes that “Stefan Iordache was one of the most personal, authentic and special artists Romania ever had and a cosmic loss for the Romanian theatre.”

Suffering from leukaemia, Stefan Iordache, aged 67, died on Sunday in Vienna from heart and respiratory failure. He made his début 45 years ago in the film The Stranger. He acted in 30 films, including, For Whom the Bells Toll, Mitica, November, the Last Ball, Glissando, Luxury Hotel and the Most Beloved of Earthmen. In theatre, his fans could see him on the stages of the Nottara, the Little Theatre and the National Theatre in Bucharest.

Stefan Iordache played in 60 theatre productions in parts such as Titus Andronicus, Hamlet, Richard the 3rd and Jesus in Master and Margaret. His disappearance is the fourth great loss this year for the Romanian theatre after Colea Rautu, Ovidiu Iuliu Moldovan and Ilarion Ciobanu. The daily Adevarul also carries an interview with Stefan Iordache published for the first time in February in which the actor said he never wanted to become an actor but, raising a finger to the sky, implied where his guidance came from.

The daily Romania Libera writes that Stefan Iordache had a 5 decade long career with no failures. Cotidianul writes that “his enigmatic characters would immediately spark your curiosity, then you started to like them and finally identify with them.” The daily Gandul writes that Stefan Iordache “was more than an actor, was a phenomenon.

His name made Romanians leave their home in the middle of the winter or neglect their chores and watch TV. People liked being around him.” The same publication calls him “the biggest Shakespearean actor Romanian theatre ever had.” After the passing away of the man who won the Theatre Union lifetime achievement award in 2001, the daily Evenimentul Zilei writes that the “world of theatre and film lost one of its most talented, discreet and rigorous artists.” Goodbye, Stefan Iordache!
