Held annually in Bucharest upon the initiative of the Romanian Foreign Ministry, the meeting of Romanian ambassadors and consuls in 2008 focuses on the following theme: “A growing economy, a dynamic diplomacy”. A fresh EU member, Romania has reported a record economic growth rate in the whole community space; it also boasts further foreign investments and accessing new markets for its own products. The efforts made by the chamber of commerce and the owners’ associations of exporters can be sustained by the state.

President Traian Basescu and PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu insisted on the so-called economic diplomacy which should become an essential instrument for promoting Romania’s interests. Foreign minister Lazar Comanescu announced that from now on all Romanian diplomats should get involved in providing assistance to Romanian companies in their attempt to find new retail markets or capital markets for placements as well as new business partners. Lazar Comanescu:

“It’s time we went beyond the routine activity of promoting national companies, of attracting foreign investments and mediating the relationship between national and foreign private companies, what we traditionally call ‘commercial diplomacy’. We have to be ready for a pragmatic economic diplomacy”.

Minister Comanescu underlined that Romania, a country with trade partners coming especially from EU countries, should make a come back on the markets it once used to be present on such as the ex-Soviet space, Asia, Africa and South America.

He warned the Romanian ambassadors and consuls alike that the evaluation of their diplomatic activity will greatly depend on the economic dimension of their activity.

In another development, President Traian Basescu pointed to a flaw in the consular assistance provided to Romanian citizens abroad whose number has increased following the visa waiver for the European states.

Although he admits that Romanian citizens are also to be blamed for not notifying their presence abroad to Romanian embassies. President Basescu underlined that the Foreign Ministry should start an information campaign to let Romanians know that they can be helped when they are abroad by Romania’s embassy and consular offices.
