John McCain si Vlad Filat One week ahead of the runoff in the local elections in the Republic of Moldova, the USA clearly expressed its support for the pro-Western candidates, annoying the pro-Russian communists.

The USA has consistently expressed its firm support for the democratic reforms fostered by the pro-Western administration in the Republic of Moldova. Half a year ago, in Washington, Moldovan PM Vlad Filat got both political support and financial aid. Three months ago, democrat Vice-president Joe Biden visited the ex-Soviet state with a predominantly Romanian-speaking population as part of a tour that also took him to Russia.

The influential US Republican senator John McCain came to Chisinau last Sunday. The former presidential candidate met PM Vlad Filat and interim president Marian Lupu, whom he encouraged to deepen the reforms and move forward on the path to European integration. John Mc Cain said that , “the current Moldovan government is committed to the path of freedom, democratic reform and economic development, which is a path to the European-Atlantic integration and better relations.”

McCain said that the continued presence of Russian troops on the territory of the Republic of Moldovan, in the breakaway Transdniestr region, was a violation of the international norms. On the other hand, the US senator said he was disappointed with the fact that the leaders of the pro-Russian Communists’ Party in opposition had refused to attend the meeting he had had with the parliamentary groups in Chisinau.

Actually, on the eve of the American senator’s visit, the communist leaders issued a blunt declaration describing McCain’s visit as a serious interference into the Republic’s domestic affairs, since it came in full swing of the campaign for the runoff in the local elections.

It is true, the American politician, famous for his anti-communist stand, did not hesitate to lay flowers at the monument of Romanian ruling prince Stephen the Great, in the center of Chisinau, jointly with the liberal candidate of the Alliance for European Integration to mayor of the Moldovan capital, incumbent mayor Dorin Chirtoaca.

On June 19th, Chirtoaca and communist Igor Dodon will face each other in the runoff of the election in Chisinau. Romanian political analyst Cristian Parvulescu warns about the major stake of the ballot in the Moldovan capital.

Cristian Parvulescu: “Next Sunday, we’ll see if Chirtoaca will succeed to come off victorious, but the battle will be fierce and it will matter a lot if the Alliance for European Integration will really function in Chisinau or not.”

Backed not only by his own party, but also by Marian Lupu’s democrats and Filat’s liberal-democrats, Chirtoaca is perceived as the spearhead of the pro-Western camp.
