Romania and the UK agreed on the expansion of their strategic partnership, after Romanian president Traian Basescu on a visit to London and British PM David Cameron had signed a joint declaration in this respect. President Basescu argued that Romania and the UK shared a common viewpoint for the coming period, with a view to ensuring increased strength and unity within the EU, with greater emphasis laid on research and development.
In turn, the British PM believes that the partnership between Romania and the UK is still far from realizing its full potential. PM Cameron insisted that providing concrete and direct support for joint businesses, as well as less regulations and more innovation would help speed up things to a certain extent.
Through the document signed on Monday, the two countries have reinforced their commitment to fostering the completion of the single market for services, free, fair and open trade between the EU and its main trade partners. On the other hand, talks between president Basescu and PM Cameron also tackled the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification and the Europe 2020 Strategy.
President Traian Basescu: “I discussed with the PM the recent positive developments related to the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification that Romania is now operating in its relation with its European partners and the European Commission. I informed PM Cameron that Romania would fulfill all its obligations in terms of military commitments, whether we speak of the Western Balkans, Afghanistan or Libya. Moreover, I also informed the PM that the Europe 2020 Strategy ranked high on Romania’s top priority list, and the government of Romania was committed to fulfilling the objectives laid down in that strategy”.
British PM David Cameron in turn said that Great Britain and Romania would work together to complete the single market for services, digital economy, energy and other sectors by eliminating all barriers in the way of economic growth. Moreover, the British PM insisted on reducing the burden of EU regulations stifling the business sector. The British official went on to say that Romania and Great Britain had agreed on a common programme to step up economic growth within the EU while considering EU enlargement to the Western Balkans, Turkey and the Republic of Moldova.
During his two-day visit to the UK, president Traian Basescu also met with representatives of the Romanian community in the UK and approached such issues as the health-care system in Romania, the agriculture sector and the labour market.
