Under the headline “Sandra Izbasa, the empress of the floor,” the paper EVENIMENTUL ZILEI hails Sandra Izbasa’s win in the floor final of the Olympic gymnastics contest, and states that the Romanian gymnastics still has the resources to train great champions. “I’ll keep competing in gymnastics for another thousand years,” Romania’s best gymnast and new Olympic champion promises in GANDUL daily. Papers in Bucharest also give extensive coverage to the Romanian Constantina Diţa Tomescu, the Olympic champion of the toughest event in athleticism.
JURNALUL NATIONAL tells the story of the “queen of marathon,” who at the age of 38 has defeated the current world champion, Catherine Ndereba from Kenya, securing Romania’s first gold medal in this event in the history of the Olympic Games. “How come we still win medals?” the daily ADEVARUL wonders, and adds that in spite of the disinterest of authorities in Bucharest, and of the poor training facilities, Romania shines in Beijing.
This performance is almost inexplicable, since Romania only has one incomplete sports center for Olympic training. While neighboring states earmark increasing amounts for sports, in Romania stadiums and training sites are sold or falling apart. ADEVARUL warns that Romanian trainers leave abroad, where they are better paid. Moreover, Romania lacks a law on sponsorship, to encourage private companies to invest in sports. Nonetheless, the paper ADEVARUL writes, we witness a miracle, thanks to the personal sacrifices of the athletes who win medals for Romania. Although the nation only remembers them once every four years.
