The Roland Garros is the leading international tennis tournament held on clay courts. It is also the second biggest Grand Slam Tournament in the professional calendar. In time, Romanian tennis players have managed to put up notable performances on the clay courts in Paris. In effect, for the Romanian tennis the International Tournament of France is the Grand Slam tournament where throughout the years the Romanians managed their top results.
In the 1970s, for instance, Ilie Nastase found himself twice on the winners’ lists. In 1970 Nastase and Ion Tiriac, won the men’s doubles in Roland Garros. In 1973, Nastase won the men’s singles without conceding a single set. Back in the 1970s Nastase was among the athletes who literally dominated men’s tennis at world level. We should not forget Nastase was the first leader of the official ATP standings that were inaugurated at that time. In the women’s version of the Roland Garros tournament, the top Romanian performers were Florenta Mihai and Virginia Ruzici. Mihai reached as far the finals, in 1977, while Ruzici won the Tournament in 1978, the single as well as the double event, alongside Mima Jausovec.
This year Horia Tecau is the Romanian to have reached the farthest in the Roland Garros tournament. In the men’s doubles he managed to qualify for the quarterfinals, alongside Robert Lindstedt from Sweden. In the first round, the two outclassed the American –Canadian pair made of James Cerretani and Adil Shamasdin, 6-4, 6-3. Then Tecau and Linstedt edged out the French Pair made of Keny De Schepper and Albano Olivetti in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. The eighth finals again brought the two against a French pair, made of Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut, whom Tecau and Lindstedt had an easy time defeating, 6-2, 6-4.
For his performance in the first half of the of the Roland Garros tournament, Radio Romania International designated Horia Tecau the Athlete of the Week.
Tercau was born in Brasov, on January 19, 1985. He has been playing tennis ever since he was 7. In Wimbledon in 2002, Tecau was the Under-21 champion in the men’s doubles, alongside Florin Mergea. He became a professional tennis player in 2003. Horia Tecau’s career in the men’s singles was not impressive, but the Romanian compelled recognition in the men’s doubles. Since 2008 Tecau has been seeded among the world’s top 100 tennis players in the double event. Since November 2009, the Romanian has been seeded among the world’s top 50 tennis players in the same category. At the moment Horia Tecau ranks 15th in the men’s doubles standings at world level.
