Privatization, de-politicization and reform – these are all issues being hotly debated. The daily ‘’Adevarul’’ wonders whether we have entered the ‘’IMF-ruled age’’, given that the essential issues of Romanian society mostly come under scrutiny when credit-offering institutions point to system flaws and impose unpopular recovery measures. One of the keys to success is increased productivity.
The daily ‘’Jurnalul National’’ writes that work productivity in Romania stands at half of the EU average. This is why the population spends more than a third of their income on food, more than the Czechs and the Poles. The phenomenon could also become worse, considering the problem of inflation. ‘’Unfortunately,” the newspaper writes, “every time productivity is discussed in Romania, those who take note of its low level fail to say why. They forget to mention that in our country, political competition has gained more ground than economic competition.’’
There is also a positive scenario, which shows that Romanians have emerged from recession. What should they then, do to overcome the crisis as well? Emboldened by the latest statistics, government officials have rushed to voice their optimism that unfortunately relies on the population bearing the brunt yet again.
The daily newspaper ‘’Evenimentul Zilei’’ believes that the rise in economic indicators seen during the first 3 months of the year has no relevance if it fails to show a positive trend over the coming months. The issue of productivity is also raised elsewhere in the press - the head of the IMF mission to Romania, quoted by ‘’Evenimentul Zilei’’ claims that productivity would increase if Romanians tried to entice back all the Romanians who enjoy professional appreciation abroad.
Compared to them, the daily ‘’Adevarul’’ writes, many people who have not yet left the country have lost all joy for life, and perhaps with good reason. The newspaper notes that ‘‘while back in the inter-war period even a humble clerk could afford a bistro lunch, nowadays most employees make do with a hurried sandwich during their lunch break.’’
