ECONOMIC MIGRATION 30/06/2008 |

After 1990 an increasing number of Romanians decided to seek a better life abroad. A better life means a better paid job. Thus, within less than 20 years, Romania lost around 2.5 million people. But now, Romania faces a work force deficit of 600 thousand, which is felt especially in constructions, textiles, the food industry and more recently the health system.
The government in Bucharest has come up with a programme meant to persuade Romanian workers abroad to come back. A number of job fairs have already been organised in countries like Spain and Italy, where most of Romania’s economic migrants are currently making a better living. Those job fairs were accompanied by awareness campaigns seeking to inform Romanians abroad about the risks of illegal work, but also about various aspects related to the work legislation of both Romania and the target countries.
The most recent job fair was organised by the Romanian Labor Ministry on Saturday, in the Spanish town of Alcala de Henares, near Madrid, in Spain. It was the 2nd job fair seeking to advertise jobs in Romania to Romanians currently working in Spain and the results were below expectations. Around 600 Romanians turned up at the fair which advertised no less than 25 thousand jobs back in Romania.
And what’s worse the latest job fair in Spain was just as unsuccessful as the one held one week before in the Italian city of Turin. Visibly upset by these unsuccessful attempts, Labor Minister Paul Pacuraru has decided to pass the responsibility of organizing such events to the National Agency for Employment and has called on the Foreign Ministry to investigate the activity of the Romanian consulates in Italy and Spain.
