According to the latest opinion poll conducted by IMAS over June 6-19th, covering a representative sample of the adult population and having a 2.8% plus-minus margin of error, Romanian president Traian Basescu enjoys the confidence of 45% of Romanians. The head of state is followed by independent Sorin Oprescu, a dissident from the left wing Social-Democratic Party in opposition, the newly elected mayor of Bucharest with 40%, Teodor Stolojan from the pro-presidential Liberal-Democratic Party with 26%, tycoon Gigi Becali, leader of the New Generation Party with 25%, liberal Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu with 23% and the leader of the Social-Democratic Party Mircea Geoana with 21%.
That is the first opinion poll carried out after the local elections of June 1st and 15th 2008 and from this perspective, the ascent in the poll of independent Sorin Oprescu seems natural, with lots of Romanians feeling disappointed with the political parties’ performance. If next Sunday, parliamentary elections were held, no party would get the 50% plus 1 majority.
According to the IMAS poll, the Liberal-Democratic Party would reap the highest percentage, 40% that is, being followed by the Social-Democratic Party with 26% and the National Liberal Party with 18%. A first would be the success of Gigi Becali’s New Generation Party reaching the 5% electoral threshold jointly with the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania, a member of the government coalition, which would get the same percentage.
Viewpoints are different in terms of the government’s performance: 23% of Romanian believe that the present governance is better than the one of social-democrat Prime Minister Adrian Nastase over 2000-2004, while another 23% believe it is the other way round. The remaining 54% consider the situation to be the same.
