At the end of last week, Bucharest hosted the IRB Nations Cup in rugby. South African team Emerging Springboks defeated Georgia and Romania, who had an equal number of points, but had different point averages. In the last game Romania played against the winners, the South African team. We lost 13 to 25, but had a good game.
This was the last game for Romeo Gontineac, a player in the national team. Supporter gave a standing ovation for the player who performed in four World cups.
Radio Romania International named Romeo Gontineac Athlete of the week. He was born on 18 December, 1973, in the village of Hlipiceni, Botosani county. Playing center, he played for important teams in Romania, South Africa, and France. At this point, he is hired by a secondary league French club in Aurillac. He played every World Cup game since 1995. In 2003 and 2007 he was captain of the National Team. He played 76 games with the national team. He scored 83 points, 16 essays and a penalty shot.
In 1995, at the World Cup in South Africa, he met his wife, Lucy. He soon found a South African club to play for, spending two seasons there. At the World Cup in 1999 their first son was born, named Taylor. The next World Cup, in 2003, marked the birth of their daughter, Olivia Rose.
