Repeatedly warned by the EU that its justice system is ineffective when it comes to big corruption cases, Romania is these days trying to make up for this negative image that prevents it from joining the Schengen agreement as planned.
In the very Passion Week, several runaway criminals who took advantage of the volatile Romanian borders were caught and brought to the country to be tried for their crimes. The case that’s been benefiting from the widest media coverage these days is that of Nicolae Popa, sentenced in the National Investment Fund case, in which over 300 thousand Romanians lost big sums of money. Popa is to stay 15 years in jail for fraud.
The Romanian state, as a warrantor, had to pay over one hundred million Euro worth of damages. In court, Nicolae Popa is likely to meet his former associates, Ioana Maria Vlas, who’s already served several years in prison, and Sorin Ovidiu Vantu, who miraculously got out unsmeared from this intricate case.
At the moment, however, Vantu is having other problems, as he allegedly blackmailed and threatened with death the manager of his own media trust, Sebastian Ghita. The trial is going to be a tough one, as Vantu, one of the richest and most controversial business people in Romania, was recorded on tape as saying incriminating things.
The series of runaway criminals continues with Mihai Necolaiciuc, former director of the Romanian Railway Company, accused of embezzling 55 million Euros. He was sent to court in Romania six years after escaping investigation in the US. There, he had lived in a luxury apartment in Palm Beach, Florida, until 2009, when he was arrested by Americans for breaking the emigration law.
Finally, another cover page runaway is Dinel Staicu, sentenced to 7 years in prison for fraud in the case involving the International Bank of Religions in Romania. He fled to Hungary, but the Interpol tracked him down and is going to extradite him in the coming days. So, for all these negative heroes the Passion Week this year seems to be harder than for the ordinary Christians.
