The number of Romanian military who died in the line of duty or got wounded in Afghanistan has increased after they have been moved from Kandahar to Zabul, in the south. Their deployment to a highly dangerous area and their increased responsibilities, including carrying out missions around 5 advanced and isolated military camps instead of guard and patrol missions around only one base, have caused the death of more Romanian military recently. The first loss of Romanian lives in that country was reported in 2003, when two Romanian military got killed.

Last week, another Romanian, Claudiu Marius Corvig, 29, was killed in an attack with light armament and grenade launchers by the Taliban while he was on a patrol mission. Three other Romanian military in armoured vehicles were wounded by the Taliban in the same incident. According to the spokesperson for the Romanian Defence Ministry, this is the first direct attack by the insurgents against Romanian troops on mission in that country. So far, Afghan rebels have only planted anti-armour mines in areas patrolled by the Romanian military.

7 Romanian military died in separate such incidents, after Romanian army vehicles passed over road-side bombs. Claudiu Marius Covrig was on his first international mission. He left the country a year ago and was expected home in a couple of weeks. “The Taliban’s attacks are part of their wider plan to outline their territory and to make their presence felt in that region”, says military analyst Cornel Codita.

According to him, “ the whole activity carried out by the Taliban is meant not so much to gain ground, but to stop losing territory, more exactly to thwart the structures that try to bring life to normal in certain hotspots and regions.” Some 644 Romanian military are currently deployed in Afghanistan, where they participate in operation ENDURING FREEDOM, under US command and take part in actions as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force for Afghanistan, ISAF.

501 Romanian military are deployed in Iraq, where Romania has lost two military since 2003. Romanian troops are also deployed to Kosovo and Bosnia-Hertzegovina. The total number of Romanian military and specialists on international missions stands at 1,500.
