Romania has met the technical criteria for the Schengen accession, while Bulgaria will solve the problems identified at its Turkish border by May. The statement was made by the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, whose country holds the presidency of the European Union at present. He also pointed out that both states, which should have joined the border-free European zone in March, are facing a lack of political support from important states. France and Germany, in particular, have opposed Romania's and Bulgaria's accession, and have requested that apart from the technical criteria, Bucharest and Sofia should also make significant progress in fighting corruption. A report drawn up by MEP Carlos Coehlo on the Schengen enlargement indicates that Romania and Bulgaria are prepared to implement all relevant regulations. The document is to be endorsed by the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties in early May, with the EP plenary due to vote on it in its Strassbourg session. The Romanian minister of administration and the interior, Traian Igas, says he is confident that the Schengen assessment will remain within the current procedural and legal framework.

Romanians protested in several places in the country against the government's healthcare reform that led to the closure of dozens of hospitals. But meanwhile, the government prepares to face a vote of confidence before Parliament once again. This time, the executive intends to rush through Parliament the Social Dialogue Code and a bill on the salaries of teaching staff, which aims to manage the wages paid to the teachers that won salary rights in Court. The Social Liberal Union, in the opposition, announced it would take no part whatsoever in these proceedings, or in any future confidence votes that the government may decide to ask Parliament to take part in, a governing procedure that the opposition resents.

Romania's economic recovery will be slower this year, but will speed up in 2012, IMF experts say. According to a report on the global economy released this week, in Romania inflation and unemployment rates will continue to drop, and the increase in prices will slow down. According to the latest data made public by the National Statistics Institute, since the beginning of this year food prices have risen by 10%, with a significant price increase also reported for fuel – over 2% in March alone. This is why the year-on-year inflation rate exceeded 8% in March, although the target for 2011 is 4%. The Romanian government is considering freezing fuel prices, under a law endorsed by Bucharest prior to its EU accession. But the decision will only be made after the government has consulted with the IMF and the European Commission.

The vehicle registration charge, renamed the “environment charge” last year, will not be abandoned, the Romanian environment minister Laszlo Borbely said. He explained that polluters must pay, therefore a solution will be identified in the coming weeks, to bring the Romanian legislation in line with the ruling of the European Court of Justice. The Court ruled that the first registration charge, levied on vehicles in Romania, comes against EU laws.

Foods and feeds obtained in Romania or imported from abroad do not show signs of radioactive contamination. The National Authority for Animal Health and Food Safety in Romania announced that the monitoring and tests conducted against the background of the Japan nuclear crisis revealed radioactivity levels that do not exceed the ceilings stipulated in the current national and European legislation. Also this week, experts with the Atomic Physics Institute announced radioactivity levels in Romania did not increase.

200 Tunisian immigrants out of the total 27 thousand currently in Italy will arrive in Romania, after president Traian Basescu expressed the country's willingness to host them, in a telephone conversation with Italy's prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi. France, Germany and Belgium do not recognise the validity of the temporary residence permits issued by the Italian government in order to enable the immigrants to travel freely in Europe. Italian officials criticised the EU member states for their lack of solidarity, and so did the representatives of the Vatican, who said Italy should not be left alone to handle this issue.

Romanian weightlifters won 10 medals in the European Championships that took place in Kazan, Russia, this week. Marius Giscan (62 kilos) won the gold in the jerk event, Razvan Martin won three silver medals (in the 69-kilo snatch, jerk and total categories), while Alexandru Rosu won two silver medals in the 77 kilos category, for the jerk event and total. Florin Ionut Croitoru (56 kilos) won the silver in the jerk event and bronze in the total, and Antoniu Buci (62 kilos) won the silver in the total and snatch events.
