This year, Romanian directors will again enter the official competition of the Cannes Film Festival slated for mid-May. Radu Mihaileanu will vie for the Palme d’Or prize with the movie ‘’La source des femmes’’, while Catalin Mitulescu will enter the ‘’Un certain regard’’ section with the movie ‘’Loverboy.’’
Romanian directors Radu Mihaileanu and Catalin Mitulescu have won themselves a real reputation at French film festivals in recent years. This year, their new films will be in the running of the Cannes Film Festival, which will take place in May. Radu Mihaileanu is vying for the grand prize in the main Palme d’Or section, with the movie ‘’La Source des Femmes’’. He’ll be up against renowned directors such as Pedro Almodóvar and Lars von Trier. Upon learning that his movie had been picked for the official competition, Mihaileanu said: quote ‘’I don’t know any director who wouldn’t be happy to go to Cannes. It is great, fantastic. All directors know that this festival is a very challenging one and that a relatively poor movie is torn to pieces at Cannes, if critics and the public don’t like it’’, end of quote.
‘’La Source des Femmes’’ is a comedy with dramatic undertones. The plot is set in an isolated village, where the women threaten to withhold sex from their husbands unless they bring them water from the only well in the area, which sits on a remote hillside. According to Mihaileanu, ‘This is a love story, which dwells on the relationship between men and women, and women’s rights in particular. It also makes reference to a very current issue – the revolutions of the Arab world – and other subjects which have an impact on us Westerners, and people all over the world.’’
Mihaileanu gained international recognition with ‘’Train de Vie’’ (‘’Train of life’’), which received awards at the Venice and Sundance Festivals. Another movie ‘’Va, vis et deveins’’ received a Cesar award for best screenplay in 2005.
Romanian director Catalin Mitulescu will take his movie ‘’Loverboy’’ to the ‘’Un certain regard’’ section. The movie tells the story of a 20-year-old man who seduces women before selling them into prostitution, but ironically falls in love with one of his potential victims. ‘’Being a loverboy is a profession, but the movie is a love story’’, the director said. He made his debut as a director in 2006, with the feature film ‘’How I spent the End of the World’’, which reaped the ‘’Un certain regard’’ award for best actress, Dorotheea Petre. In recent years, many Cannes prizes went to Romanians, with director Cristian Mungiu winning the Palme d’Or for ‘’4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days’’ in 2007.
