Some 200 films are to be screened in Cluj Napoca, central Romania, in the 7th “Transylvania” International Film Festival (TIFF), scheduled to take place between May 30th and June the 8th. Twelve of these are works by directors in an early stage of their career, having completed their first or second full-length film, and who are competing for the Transylvania Trophy. A special guest of the Festival is the French actress Catherine Deneuve, who will receive a TIFF Lifetime Achievement Award at the end of the Festival. The Festival’s honorary director, Tudor Giurgiu, told us:

“I believe one indicator for the importance of this event is the number of guests who confirmed their participation. Apart from the guests from Romania, we have about 400 foreign participants: journalists, directors, producers. At the end of the event we will also organise the “Days of the Romanian Film”, with gala screenings of films shown for the first time. One of them is Mircea Daneliuc's latest work, “Marilena”. I hope it will be a very pleasant surprise for film goers. In the same section we will also screen Horatiu Malaele's “Silent Wedding”.”

This year's Festival sees a number of novelties, aside from the already traditional sections. Film critic Mihai Chirilov, TIFF director, explains:

“Apart from the main sections, which need no further introduction - and I mean Supernova, No Limits, Shadows, 3x3 - there are also some innovations. There will be series of films from Russia, Denmark and the Republic of Moldova, intended to showcase cultural and cinematographic diversity. This year we even have a series of films dedicated to the Rroma ethnic group. Igor Cobileanski and Pavel Braila, from the Republic of Moldova, will be two of the directors whose works will be presented in the “Days of the Romanian Film”, and Thomas Ciulei will have the national opening of his documentary “Flower Bridge”, which received awards in a German festival a month ago.”

The recipient of this year's TIFF Excellence Award is actor Radu Beligan, whose Romanian theatre and cinema career spans 65 years. Actress Tamara Buciuceanu's close to 60-year-long career will also be celebrated in the event, with the award of a TIFF lifetime achievement trophy.
