THE UNITER AWARDS GALA (24.04.2007) |
(2007-04-24) |
Last updated: 2007-04-24 16:02 EET |
On Monday evening, the town of Sibiu hosted the Awards Gala of the Theatre Union in Romania-UNITER. For the first time in 15 years, the event moved from Bucharest to Sibiu in central Romania because in 2007, the town is European capital of culture. For a few hours, theatre people designated by the juries as the most outstanding representatives of their profession in 2006 got onto the stage. No less than 25 prizes were awarded. Let us mention some of them. The debut award went to actor Cristian Grosu from the National Theatre in Cluj-Napoca, central Romania. The award for set design was reaped by Dragos Buhagiar. The best radio drama award went to Attila Vizauer. Andrea Bibiri got the best actress award for her role in “Blasted” by Sarah Kane, directed by the famous Andrei Serban.
Marius Stanescu was presented with the best actor award for his role in “Hamletmachine” by Heiner Muller. For the second year running, Radu Afrim was designated as best director for his piece “joy.megaJoy” while “Elizaveta Bam” by Daniil Harms, directed by Alexandru Tocilescu, a star of Romanian theatre, was declared the best production of 2006. Last but not least, “Romania Complex” by Mihaela Mihailov was declared the play of the year. The prize granted by the Romanian Royal House was presented by Prince Jean d”Orleans, for the first time in Romania. The excellence award went to Emil Boroghina on April 23rd, the very birth date of Shakespeare, for having organized the International Festival bearing the name of the great playwright.
Unfortunately, this year, the joy that usually accompanies the UNITER Awards Gala was overshadowed by the large number of theatre people withdrawing from competition, filing contestations or expressing their discontent. All three nominees for the best critic award withdrew from competition. They said that a critic accused of having expressed his viewpoint in two press articles before the final jury took their decision had stayed a member of the jury. Andrei Serban also turned down the nomination for the best director award because, quote “ persons who had ostentatiously stood against his show”, were designated members of the jury. Actor Vlad Ivanov withdrew from competition saying his role in “Elizaveta Bam” was a leading role and not a support one as the jury considered it. Last but not least, one of the jury members declined membership in a letter saying that a thorough public debate was needed on a new prize-awarding formula, on a new way of institutionalizing the promotion of theatre values.
