Shocked by the powerful quake and the devastating tsunami that hit it and facing a nuclear threat, Japan has become the world’s main destination of humanitarian aid. Starting with last week, Romania joined the countries that announced they would send aid to Japan. The authorities are now joined by the local branch of the Red Cross international humanitarian organization.

The latter has launched the “Aid for Japan” campaign aimed at raising funds and making available a phone service through which Romanians can get in touch with their relatives in Japan. The Romanian Red Cross has announced that the funds raised, to be used by its Japanese counterpart, will help build temporary shelters, re-establish drinking water supply and health facilities, medical care and psychological therapy for the population.

The Romanian Red Cross has made it clear that the campaign mainly targets companies, business people, governmental and non-governmental organizations. A Romanian undertaking has also been reported in Great Britain. A well-known Romanian-born composer, Nicole Formescu has composed the piece entitled “As One” in memory of the victims in Japan.

The piece is performed by her ten-year old girl. Nicole Formescu, who has 11 platinum discs in Great Britain, has donated her copyrights for the song to those affected by the disaster in Japan. On the other hand, there are controversies about the way the authorities in Bucharest have dealt with the evacuation of Romanians from Japan.

The government is mainly blamed that the Romanians who wanted to leave Japan had to pay half of the ticket price. So, although over 350 Romanians had asked for help, only 30 of them boarded the plane sent by the Romanian authorities to Japan. To foil the wave of criticism, Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said that charity acts could not be done with public money. In response, the papers said the safety of the Romanian nationals should be invaluable.
