The GANDUL daily writes that, quote “Basescu jumpstarts the election campaign,” unquote, after on Tuesday the President of Romania quote “attacked the Constitutional Court, Parliament, his political opponents and the dull campaign in Bucharest” unquote. Most newspapers focus on the President's offensive, which seemed intended to revive the public's interest in politics, at a time when, with the Easter and May 1st holiday barely over, Romanians show more interest in the outcome of the national football championship than in the local elections due next month.

But the interest is proportional with the offer. Quoted by ROMANIA LIBERA, Basescu accuses the candidates to the Bucharest Mayor’s office of rigging the campaign by “praising each other in talk shows. This kind of game proves unreliability and disregard for the Romanians”. But according to sociologist Catalin Stoica, quoted by the daily ADEVARUL, it is equally true that “few voters want a dirty, coarse, spicy campaign.” So far, he adds, “we haven't had at least that, not to mention a debate on policies”. According to COTIDIANUL as well, quote “Basescu injects hormones into the electoral campaign,” but he is hardly innocent in doing so.

“He has brought one target alone under crossfire: his political opponents. Which, the newspaper notes, just so happen to be the opponents of the pro-presidential Democratic Liberal Party in the campaign that just begun.” The idea is shared by JURNALUL NATIONAL, in its turn affiliated to the media holding owned by the Conservative leader, an arch-enemy of Basescu.

The daily writes that the interview was, ”a shameless campaign for the presidential party“, accepted by the public radio channel because, “it is not serving the public, but once again, those in Power”. According to CURENTUL, the President attacked his left-wing predecessor Ion Iliescu, a Social Democratic Senator today, of being “an expert in coups d’etat” , and of having negotiated his impeachment last year with the Liberal Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu.

As for the former Social Democratic Premier Adrian Nastase, Basescu criticised him for “still seeking a top-level political career” , while at the same time resorting to “all possible tricks” to get anti-corruption prosecutors off his back. In reply, in ADEVARUL, Iliescu compares Basescu to the former communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, and accuses him of suffering from “pathological obsession”.

In turn, the daily EVENIMENTUL ZILEI, the Prime Minister stated he was “appalled that the President, of whom he expects more responsibility, lets words come out from his mouth without consideration.”
