STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES IN ROMANIAN – ITALIAN RELATIONS 07/05/2008 |

In spite of the recent tensions caused by crimes perpetrated by Romanian citizens, particularly Roma ethnics, in Italy, the economic relations between the two countries are quite good. A proof in this respect are the figures presented in Bucharest Tuesday, at the Annual Meeting of the Union of Italian Business People in Romania. Of the 22 thousand companies operating in the Romanian market, over 12 thousand run on Italian capital, having approximately 800 thousand employees and contributing 10 per cent to the Romanian GDP. Attending the meeting, Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu encouraged companies and banks in the Peninsula to further invest in Romania and to get involved in the economy with the highest growth rate in Europe.
He voiced his confidence that Italian business people will invest in sectors like IT, the automotive industry, energy and agriculture, and that they will expand to other regions of Romania than the north-western area, where the Italian capital is concentrated. The Italian Ambassador to Bucharest Daniele Mancini, pointed out that Romania is one of the main partners of his country, with trade exceeding 12 billion Euro last year. He emphasised that the tension triggered lately by the statements of some officials in Rome against Romanian immigrants should not impact the business relations between the two states. Premier Tariceanu in his turn expressed his hope that the new Government in Rome will adopt a pragmatic and well-balanced approach on the free movement issue, in line with relevant European principles.
“I trust we will see an enhanced bilateral co-operation at a governmental level, at a political level and, more importantly, between entrepreneur associations. There should be no doubt that Romania is not represented by the crimes that were extensively covered during the Italian election campaign. We should not overlook the hundreds of thousands of Romanians who contribute to the economic growth of Italy and also the many Italian companies in Romania.”
The opinion is shared by the new Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, who agreed, in a phone conversation with his counterpart in Bucharest, that the public perception ought not to affect bilateral relations.
