A sacred holiday for all Romanians and a relaxation opportunity for employees, this year the Easter has turned into a week-long leave, thanks to a recent Government decision which provides for two extra days off, with the employers being left to decide if and when employees are to make up for them. This is why people were able to extend their Easter holiday until after Labour Day on May 1st, which is an official holiday in Romania. After having celebrated Easter with their families, enjoying the traditional lamb dishes, the eggs and Easter cakes, Romanians, particularly young ones, generally prefer to go out with their friends.
Those with little money to spend will choose a barbecue, a walk in the park or a pop or folk music concert. The better-off may go to the seaside or mountain resorts or abroad. If they choose a mountain resort, they may go skiing, going on quad bike trips or go trekking. Those who choose a seaside resort can spend their time in dance clubs or walking on the beach. If the weather is fine, they may even have a dip in the sea.
Unlike in previous years, when Romanians preferred to spend this holiday abroad, particularly in Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, which are the closest and most accessible destinations for Romanians, in 2008 they have chosen places closer to home.
Although officially they have the lowest number of non-working days in Europe, there's no question about it: Romanians will always make the best out of their holidays.
