5 weeks after the Catholic Easter, on Saturday night, Orthodox and Greek-Catholic Christians from all over the world will be celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. During Passion Week, which precedes the Resurrection, Christians go to church to attend religious ceremonies that commemorate the last moments in the life of Jesus on earth, before His Crucifixion and Resurrection. Each day in the Passion Week has special significance. Maundy Thursday marks the Last Supper Jesus had with His disciples and also Judas’ betrayal.
Then, Good Friday, when according to tradition, Jesus Christ was crucified and died on the cross to redeem the mankind, is a day of fasting, prayer and penance when people are not supposed to eat or drink anything. On Friday evening Christians go to church to attend the burial ceremony of the Lord, and on Saturday night sadness turns into joy as Jesus Christ rises from the dead. The Passion Week is an intense week for Christians who are preparing their bodies and souls for the great joy of Resurrection.
During the Passion Week, women start making preparations for the Easter dinner. On Maundy Thursday eggs are painted red, the red color symbolizing life. According to tradition, the eggs boiled and painted red on this day don’t go bad quite so quickly. The Easter menu also includes Easter cheese cake, lamb steak and red wine. On Easter Christians greet each other by saying “Christ is risen”, with the traditional response being “Indeed He is risen.”
