Recently, Romanian president Traian Basescu has repeatedly voiced concern over the present situation in Romania’s education system. According to Basescu, Romanian education has made no progress, proof of this being that no Romanian university has entered the list of the top 100 Universities in Europe, or the world’s top 500 universities.

The head of the Romanian state said the only viable solution for the development of Romanian society is a competitive education system. On Wednesday, President Basescu participated in ‘The Largest Lesson in the World’, staged in over 100 countries, in which Romania has participated for 8 consecutive years. 5 million children from all over the world, including 30 thousand Romanians, are trying to attract the attention of leading politicians over the necessity of ensuring a high-quality education for every child. President Basescu underlined the need for essential changes to be made to the national education system, as in the future young people from Romania may run the risk of being discriminated against in the European labour market, due to the lack of education and competitiveness.

“If we do not look at the realities of our education system with responsibility, it will only be pure demagogy to speak about discrimination against the Roma people, or against disabled children, as whole generations of Romanian children will become subject to discrimination on Europe’s labour market.”

The Romanian President went on to say that that new education systems must be implemented, while the process of upgrading the equipment used in schools and universities must be carried out concurrently. Basescu also tackled the problem of disabled children, and of those coming from poor and Roma families, where the dropout rate is high. President Basescu criticised the activity of government organisations in education, pointing out that it is not poverty which is the main cause of school dropout, underlying that teachers are also to blame for the poor performances obtained by students. According to Romania’s President, the strategy for modernizing the education system in Romania, with 10 compulsory grades, must include a code establishing the teaching staff’s right and obligations, also setting the rights and obligations of the pupils and students.
