The most important rally ever held in Romania was hosted on Monday and Tuesday by the city of Baia Mare (north-west), on a 75-km route. The Romanian stage of the competition is part of the 3,000-km “Dakar Series”- “Central Europe Rally”. The competition was organised in this part of Europe after terrorist threats led to the cancellation of the Lisbon-Dakar competition for the first time in history.
Another six stages are scheduled to take place in Hungary. As many as 238 teams, 12 of which are Romanian, have entered the competition. They take part in the bike, quad, car and truck categories, the last of which is the only one without a Romanian presence. The stars of the competition are France's Stephane Peterhansel and Spain's Carlos Sainz. Peterhansel, aged 43, is one of the legends of the Dakar Rally.
His co-national Casteu holds on to the lead in the general standings of the Central Europe Rally, followed by Katrinak and Chilean Francisco Lopez. In the quad section, the stage was won by Romanian Razvan Irimescu, followed by French Hubert Deltrieu and Czech Josef Machacek. The next stage, the fourth, takes place in Hungary, between Debrecen and Veszprem, on a total 580-km route with two specials. Worth mentioning is that 95 pilots have remained in the competition.
