The first round of the local elections is scheduled on June the 1st in Romania. The event has already sparked heated debates among politicians as well as in the media. ”We have no other choice but to return to the stakes of domestic elections even if we hate that” - ROMANIA LIBERA headlines, and carries on with the following: ”Nearly a week ago when the NATO summit was held in Bucharest we no longer heard of attacks leveled at political opponents, or of strings being pulled to form an electoral alliance, or underhand actions taken to tarnish the reputation of some of the candidates.” The biggest battle will be fought for the post of Bucharest mayor.

On Tuesday the Democrat Liberal Party, enjoying the best position according to the polls, has launched the Party’s Secretary General Vasile Blaga’s candidacy for the job. The former Interior ministry’s candidacy was launched as incumbent mayor Adriean Videanu utterly refused to run for a new term in office. The daily COTIDIANUL had its own misgivings over Blaga’s statement, when the former Interior Minister said he loved Bucharest. Cotidianul reminded its readers that for the most of his 52 years Blaga had been living in Bihor County, North-western Romania. The Romanian daily also revealed that Vasile Blaga officially became an inhabitant of Bucharest last month. In January Blaga bought for himself a luxury dwelling for the hefty sum of 850,000 Euro.

According to EVENIMENTUL ZILEI within the Social Democratic Party, the battle for candidacy between District 5 Mayor Marian Vanghelie and Social Democrats’ vice-president, Sorin Oprescu, has been won by another vice-president, Miron Mitrea, a former union leader and a former Transport Minister. The decision will be officially made public on Friday; yet the spokesperson of the Social Democrats’ Bucharest constituency, Ana Birchall says it was about time someone capable of dragging Bucharest out of the chaos created by the Democrat – Liberals, came at the helm of Bucharest. And that person would be Miron Mitrea.

But these plans might be overturn by another member of the social democratic party: Sorin Oprescu. He told the Daily GANDUL that unless he is designated as a candidate on Friday, he is set to enter the race as an independent candidate, handing in his resignation from the PSD. Oprescu also revealed he has already opened an account for those who are willing to donate sums of money for his campaign. Oprescu relies on polls according to which he is favorite among the prospective Social-Democrat candidates. Newspapers also reveal that liberals are to officially announce their candidate for the Bucharest mayoralty. Their candidate will most probably be incumbent Transport Minister Ludovic Orban.
