Scores of thousands of people are trying to get out of harm’s way in Libya. Among them, many Romanians are facing repatriation difficulties. The international community has intensified efforts to help tens of thousands of people trying to escape the violence in Libya, against the backdrop of an increasingly tense situation. The BBC reports that the border with Tunisia is seeing a huge flow of people, most of whom are Egyptian and Tunisian workers, desperate to return home. A UN official has said that 20 000 people now need shelter and food.
According to the same source, over the last week, about 100 thousand people have left Libya, which is under increased control of the ruling regime’s opposition. Despite local and international pressure, Muamar Gaddafi, who’se been in office for 42 years, remains adamant and claims that the situation is calm.
However, the leader in Tripoli has accused Al Qaida of being behind the ‘’terrorist bands’’ that have made victims in Libya. The tension, fuelled by protests that have entered the 3rd week, has also taken its toll on Romanian nationals who are trying to get home as soon as possible. Some of them have already been brought home on board planes of the Romanian Defense Ministry, others have traveled on foreign aircraft.
Several scores of Romanians have been able to embark on ships sent out by various states to repatriate their citizens. The Foreign Ministry and the Defense Ministry have set up an emergency task force that can take all necessary measures to evacuate all Romanians and other foreign nationals requesting this.
One of the Romanians who returned to Bucharest on Sunday talked about his experience: ‘’The worst situation is at the airport. I think a terrible humanitarian crisis is about to begin there. There are tens of thousands of people outside. Police cordon off the area, stop you and ask where you’re from and then allow you to walk on. There are more Romanians in the desert. If they are not brought back to Tripoli, they will be in danger of being attack by criminal gangs.’’
The Romanian Foreign Ministry calls on all Romanians in Libya to leave the country. In another move, on Sunday, the UN Security Council passed a resolution imposing tough sanctions on Gaddafi, his family and ruling party cronies. The Council also referred Gadhafi to the Hague Tribunal, for investigation into potential war crimes.
