The Transylvania Film festival has been accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations. The festival, one of the most important events in Central and Southeastern Europe, is thus one of the 40 most select festivals in the world.
Set up in 2002, the Transylvania Film Festival, or ‘TIFF’ as it is known, hosted by the city of Cluj Napoca, in the north west of Romania, has recently been accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations. The rules imposed by this body on accredited international film festivals refer to firm commitments by the organizers to observe the highest standards in screening the scheduled films.
Other rules concern the promotion of the films on the festival agenda within the filmmaking industry, such as distributors and sales agents, as well as the quality of the event organization, as well as to an efficient system for fighting piracy. The general manager of the Federation, Benoit Ginisty, has said that this accreditation of the Transylvania Film Festival is a recognition of the “outstanding efforts made by the Transylvania Film Festival organizers to set up one of the most important meeting points for all those interested in Romanian film”.
Organizers are optimistic and say that the premises have been created for the festival to become, in the next years, a top category festival, alongside 13 other festivals such as those in Cannes, Berlin and Venice. At present the Transylvania Film Festival is one of the most important events of the genre in Central and Eastern Europe, being a competition that focuses on debut films or directors who have already produced their second feature film.
The Transylvania Film Festival has several sections such as ‘Supernova’ - devoted to films that won awards at prestigious international festivals, ‘Without Limit’ – dedicated to challenging, innovating films making use of inventive film-language, and “Shadows” which includes fantasy and horror movies, features and shorts. TIFF also includes retrospectives and special documentary films programs. Besides the official competition, the festival hosts an annual competitive section called ‘The Days of Romanian Film” which is a marathon of the most important Romanian premieres. The section is important as a launch-pad at international level for Romanian filmmakers.
At the Transylvania Film Festival you can watch more than 200 films from all over the world. Last year’s edition attracted an audience of more than 55 thousand people. In its 9 years of existence TIFF has become a brand well known for the quality of its programs, the variety of events and outstanding foreign guests – including Annie Girardot, Vanessa Redgrave, Franco Nero, Catherine Deneuve, and Claudia Cardinale. Romanian directors of the new wave such as Cristi Puiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, Catalin Mitulescu, Radu Muntean and Cristian Mungiu have also attended the festival over the years.
