Romanian president Traian Basescu impassively continues his moves for the organisation of a referendum on the introduction of the uninominal vote. Meanwhile, on an equally stony note, opposition parties stay true to their initiative on the president’s impeachment. MPs have decided, however, to first consider the opposition’s requirements deciding to debate on Wednesday, the request signed by the 182 MPs from the Social Democratic Party and the Greater Romania Party calling for the president to be impeached for serious and repeated Constitution violations. A day later, the MPs will also dwell on the president’s initiative concerning the change of the voting system. This may have determined Basescu to mount an attack on Parliament, accusing it of unconstitutional actions. Traian Basescu:

"Under the Constitution, Parliament should analyse the president’s requirements as a priority. I sometimes have the feeling that the Parliament places itself above the law and even above the Constitution. The votes on the amendment of the Referendum law attest to this and so will most likely some other future actions.”

The president referred to a parliament vote that enabled his easier impeachment via referendum, a vote declared by the Constitutional Court as running counter to the Constitution. Basescu also mentioned the type of question the referendum should held around. His statement was yet another sign that he viewed himself engaged in a war against Parliament:

"I’d be very interested in an extremely simple type of question which directly meets civil expectations and does not allow Parliament to interpret what the citizen has voted for.”

The Democratic Party, formerly led by Traian Basescu and the Liberal Democratic Party, a pro-presidential dissident party that recently parted with the National Liberal Party, headed by prime minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, unequivocally stand by the uninominal vote and the referendum proposed by the president. Most of the other parliamentary parties claim, however, that this would result in a waste of time and public purse money, since draft laws have already been tabled over the replacement of the ticket vote with the uninominal vote. The legislative can quickly have its say on these projects. Mircea Geoana, head of the Social Democrats, one-upped from the opposition’s uncomfortable bench:

"Mr. Basescu is clearly trying to hijack attention from his own impeachment. During the Democrats’ youth leaders meeting a few months ago, Mr. Basescu said the uninominal vote was not good for Romania.”
