The Romanian film industry has scored a new success, which seems to confirm the talent of the “new wave” of Romanian film directors. Cristian Mungiu’s “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days” has been selected to compete in the 60th Film Festival in Cannes due to take place in May. Mungiu is aiming at the grand prize, the Palme d’Or, which only two Romanian productions have won so far: Ion Popescu Gopo’s “A Short History” in 1957 and Catalin Mitulescu’s “Traffic” in 2004.
Mungiu describes his latest production as the story of two girls on a Saturday morning in 1987. He says the film is part of a cycle called Recollections from the Golden Age, in which he recounts stories that circulated during communism as the director remembers them. Aged 39, Mungiu went to Cannes for the first time in 2002, with a film called “Occident”, included in the Quinzaine des Realisateurs section.
Another Romanian production, “California Dreamin”, the first long-reel film by Cristian Nemescu, was also selected for the Cannes competition. The film, which was in a post-production stage at the time of the director’s death at just 27 in 2006, was selected for the Un Certain Regard section. Moreover, his short film “Marilena from P7” was selected in the festival’s parallel section Semaine de la critique.
We should also note that Romanian director Cristi Puiu, the winner of the "Un Certain Regard" award in 2005 for his film “The Death of Mr Lazarescu”, will sit in the jury this year for this category. (Mihai Pelin)
