THE CATHOLIC EASTER 24/03/2008 |
(2008-03-24) |
Last updated: 2008-03-25 14:51 EET |
At the end of the Easter Mass at the Vatican, in front of tens of thousands of people in St Peter Square, Pope Benedict the 16th delivered his traditional Urbi et Orbi message and wished the world a happy Easter in 63 languages, including Romanian. On Resurrection night, the Pope baptised seven people, among whom Egyptian born journalist Magdi Allam, deputy director of the Corriere della Sera daily, known for its criticism of extremist Islamism. Easter was also celebrated by over two and a half million Roman Catholic and Protestant faithful in Romania, who live mostly in the center and west of the country.
Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church emphasized the need for reconciliation among Christians. The good relations between the Romanian Orthodox Church and the Holy See, resumed after communism fell in 1989, reached a pinnacle with the historic visit paid by Pope John Paul the second to Romania in 1999, the first visit by a pope to a majority Orthodox country. On the occasion of the Easter holidays, celebrated five weeks before the Orthodox Easter, the new apostolic nuncio to Romania, His Excellency Monsignor Javier Francisco Lozano, confirmed, in an interview to RRI, the fact that the Holy See and the Romanian Orthodox Church enjoy good relations:
“I am very happy to have been appointed nuncio to this country, because relations between the Catholic Church and the Romanian Orthodox church are very good. The Orthodox world has priority in the ecumenical activity of the Catholic Church. However, in Orthodoxy, some churches are closer than other to the Catholic Church, and the Romanian church is one of them. The visit in 1999 by Pope John Paul the Second and the official visit by the late Patriarch Teoctist of the Romanian church to the Vatican in 2002 set the tone for the brotherly relations between the Catholic Church and the Romanian Orthodox Church. Today, Patriarch Teoctist’s successor, Daniel, sets and example for Christians, with his openness towards the world and towards ecumenism. For us it is a priority to consolidate relations with our Romanian counterparts, because there are many elements that unite us. For Easter, as apostolic nuncio freshly appointed to this country, I would like to tell RRI listeners all over the world that my wish is for the Savior to come to life once more in the hearts of Romanian people”.
