Bucharest, April 2nd to the 4th, 2008 – these are the dates of the biggest summit in NATO’s history, which will bring together the political and military elite of the world. Aware of the scope and importance of the event, as well as the responsibility it entails, the Romanian authorities started their preparations early. They have planned everything in detail, and can safely say now, a week before the summit, that everything is on schedule. The latest information was made public by the Romanian foreign minister Adrian Cioroianu, who also pointed out that “holding this summit in Bucharest reflects Romania’s maturity as a partner in this alliance.”
He went on to say that “the decision to hold the summit in Bucharest also has a significant value, in that NATO is not only a military alliance but also a political-military alliance, a community based on sharing the same principles and values.” In Cioroianu’s opinion, choosing Romania as the venue for the summit says that this community based on this particular set of values has expanded to south-eastern Europe and has reached the shores of the Black Sea.
In real numbers, the summit means 3,000 participants from the Alliance’s 26 members, from the 23 states that form the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, from the states contributing troops to Afghanistan, as well as leading representatives of prestigious international organisations like the United Nations, the World Bank and the European Commission. 3,500 journalists will cover the event in Romania’s capital. A media centre has been made available for them, covering 5 floors in the Parliament Palace and 16 press conference rooms. As far as the summit’s agenda is concerned, this is what Kurt Volker, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for European Affairs told our correspondent in Washington:
“I think Bucharest will provide an opportunity to continue NATO’s transformation, which started a while ago. This implies the admission of new members into the North Atlantic Alliance. The summit will focus especially on the NATO mission in Afghanistan, which is a crucial mission for the Alliance at the moment. We must continue to make progress. I also believe that NATO will reiterate its support for peace and stability and its commitment to the KFOR mission in Kosovo. These will be the main issues to be discussed at the summit in Bucharest.”
