| THE CITY OF SIBIU AND THE ASTRA MUSEUM
This QSL for 2007 bears the “0” number and is a small gift from us, aside from the 12 annual cards we usually send to our listeners. Together with the QSL for January, you’ll also receive this QSL 0. This special - edition QSL is a collage of photos featuring emblematic sites from the 2007 European Capital of Culture: the Grand Square, the Brukental Museum, the defensive towers of the old medieval citadel, the New City Hall, which can be seen in a building which is part of the city’s heritage, the Bridge of Lies, as well as traditional peasant houses on display in the ASTRA Museum of Folk Civilisation.
The city of Sibiu has been designated, along the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, “European Capital of Culture in 2007”, following a decision made on May the 27th 2004 by the Council of EU Ministers of Culture. Situated in southern Transylvania, the city of Sibiu boasts a genuine medieval atmosphere. First documented in 1191 under the name of Cibinium, Sibiu grew to become a strategic area, near the Turnu Rosu Pass on Olt Valley, which links Muntenia to Transylvania. Between the 13th and 16th centuries, as many as 4 rings of fortifications were built around Sibiu, whose old centre, grouped around 3 historical squares (The Grand Square, the Small Square and the Huet Square) grew into the largest medieval site in Romania, being delimited to this day by the ruins of the 4th ring of fortifications. In late 17th century, Sibiu boasted 39 defence towers, boasting an intense trading activity and craftsmanship within the walls of the citadel. The ensuing development of the town necessitated the demolition of a large part of the fortifications, but many such buildings can still be admired today, as can be seen in the photo collage depicted by our QSL.
