A POLITICAL FIRST IN ROMANIA (19.04.2007)

In a vote of 322 deputies to 108, president Traian Basescu was suspended on charges of unconstitutional conduct. Seen by Basescu’s supporters as a coup d’etat, the suspension disregarded the consultative opinion of the Constitutional Court, which ruled against the suspension. Vasile Blaga, the secretary general of the Democratic Party, the president’s former party, believes that Traian Basescu was suspended because he upset the informal arrangement between the Social Democratic Party, in the opposition, and the National Liberal Party in the government by speaking out against corruption:

“It’s obvious this is not about the violation of the constitution. It’s simply political vengeance, settling of accounts and nothing more. This confrontation should be brought before the electorate. President Traian Basescu and the Democratic Party have kept clear of the political and economic slime, which is engulfing more and more the reform promised to the Romanians. It’s the people who will have the last say.”

The speeches of the representatives of the anti-presidential majority have been highly critical. Mircea Geoana, the leader of the Social Democratic Party:
“In these last two years, the Romanian political system has shown its limitations, because of the ambition of a politician who ended up in a position he never understood and which he refused to accept with all its responsibilities and demands. Traian Basescu is a political project that failed. He is incapable of pushing the country forward, of uniting it.”

The vice-president of the National Liberal Party, Crin Antonescu:
“Traian Basescu wants a political regime for Romania in which a single person, that is himself, should hold the whole power. This is not possible in today’s Europe and in today’s Romania.”

The leader of the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania, also in the government, Marko Bela:
“We are not willing to cancel what we have done so far, we do no want to go back, we do not want a backward republic instead of a parliamentary republic, and we will not accept a new cult of personality in Romania.”

Finally, the leader of the Conservative Party, Dan Voiculescu, labelled Basescu as a “Marxist”, a “Stalinist” and quote “a former member of the secret police still handling secret files.” unquote
