PREPARATIONS FOR THE NATO SUMMIT 11/03/2008 |
(2008-03-11) |
Last updated: 2008-03-12 14:41 EET |
For three days, Romania will host as many as 3,000 officials, including 26 leaders of Allied states, as well as 3,500 journalists. The participants’ safety and the smooth running of the meeting will be ensured by a 23,000-strong Interior and Administrative Reform Ministry corps, alongside the anti-terror task forces of the Security and Protection Service and the Romanian Intelligence Service. Interior and Administrative Reform Ministry staff will monitor compliance with weapon and ammunition control regulations, and the processing of participants' papers. Border police have already stepped up checkpoint procedures, and will support surveillance operations along official routes and the locations of the Summit.
Throughout the event, the Bucharest Baneasa International Airport will be closed for civilian air traffic, all flights being re-routed to the “Henri Coanda” Otopeni Airport. All Summit-related flights within Romania’s air space will be coordinated by the Ministry of Defence. Overflight of Romanian territory will be prohibited for all State-owned aircraft registered in Romania or in another country, which carry troops, ammunition, weaponry, explosives, radioactive or other hazardous substances. Romanian security forces do their best to ensure a quiet NATO Summit.
According to unofficial information, on the eve of the Summit, US President George W. Bush and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will have a tete-a-tete meeting at the summer residence of the Head of the Romanian State Traian Basescu, in the Neptun resort on the Black Sea coast. On the other hand, a news release issued by the US Embassy in Bucharest reports that the main issues on the Summit agenda will include NATO-Russia relations, the enlargement of the Alliance, the developments in Afghanistan, the anti-missile defence and the Kosovo issue. Kurt Volker, Principal Deputy Assistant of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has recently pointed out that, while there are differences between the views of the United States and Europe in many respects, the USA and the Europe do form a single democratic community and they need to work together.
As for the NATO enlargement, Volker regards the process as a tremendous historic success for the Alliance, which is stronger now as a result of having countries like Poland, the Czech Republic and Romania as members of the North Atlantic Treaty. He expressed confidence that further countries will be invited to join NATO at the Summit in Bucharest.
