Under street pressure, Hosni Mubarak announced on Tuesday night that he was no longer running for re-election in September. President Mubarak did emphasize the fact that he remained in power over the next few months, in order to provide a peaceful transition for his successor. Mubarak promised a constitutional reform to placate the protesters.

Hosni Mubarak: “My first and foremost responsibility right now is to reestablish order and security, securing a peaceful transition of power in a protected environment for Egypt and Egyptians, to hand over the leadership of the country to those who will be elected by the people. I don’t intend to run in the next election. I’ve spent enough time leading the country. I will see through my work, my duty towards Egypt, and I will be handing over power in line with constitutional provisions. Over the next few months left in my term I will work hard to carry out measures to hand over power to the next legitimate leaders. Articles in the Constitution will be changed in order to limit presidential terms. Parliament will have to debate constitutional amendments, including those regarding election law. All political changes should contribute towards these discussions.”

According to our special correspondent in Cairo, the Egyptian president’s speech was met with hostility by protesters. Average Egyptians and opposition leaders continue to call for Mubarak’s immediate resignation. Romanian analyst Bogdan Chireac says that, after 30 years of dictatorship, Egyptians look forward to free elections.

However, he warns that Islamists may win the elections, a reality which may upset the geopolitical balance: “An Islamist fundamentalist regime in Egypt would blow up North Africa and the Middle East, and it would change things in the entire Mediterranean area, including the European Union. The European Union’s border stretches thousands of kilometers along the Mediterranean Sea. The entire geo-political configuration there would go up in flames if Egypt falls into fundamentalist hands. Bear in mind that the Muslim Brotherhood is funded mostly by Iran, and not only by Iran. There’s more hidden there, and we don’t want an Islamist regime in Egypt at this time.”
